A number of personnel under the agency in charge of airport security at Ninoy Aquino International Airport have been suspended by Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) for various offenses.
According to a report by ABS-CBN News, 25 security staff from the Office of the Transport Security (OTS) face various extortion complaints from passengers, among them is a relative of airport general Jose Angel Honrado.
The suspended personnel were stripped of their security access to the airport as they received the suspension order as investigation is in progress.
Honrado’s relative was undergoing a routine baggage inspection when airport security personnel asked for a chocolate bar found inside the luggage being inspected.
Complaints from air passengers include missing mobile phones, perfumes, jewelry, cash, electronic items, wedding ring, and even canned goods. These complaints were channeled through the Airport Security Inspectorate Office (asio), the agency tasked by MIAA to conduct daily security inspection of all security personnel assigned at the airport.
MIAA denied an earlier request of the OTS to re-deploy the 25 suspended airport security personnel.
The OTS recently came under fire after some of its staff were accused of involvement in “tanim bala” modus operandi as well as stealing the bag of a newly-arrived Filipino worker from Kuwait.
