A Turkish merchant flying to Hong Kong earlier this week claimed he lost goods worth approximately $260,000 after two watches and cash were stolen from his hand-carried luggage stowed in the plane’s overhead compartment.
Mustasa Saci, 39, was flying from Turkey to Hong Kong via Dubai on an Emirates flight.
It was only when Saci arrived in Hong Kong that he realized cash and valuables were stolen. He reported the incident to airline staff, who called the Hong Kong police.
Hong Kong government statistics indicate at least 60 cases of mid-air theft were reported last year, up from 48 in 2014. Travelers are thereby advised to keep their valuables within sight and must not place any large amount of cash or high-valuable property inside the luggage cabin of the aircraft.
