Berlin in 36 Hours

Berlin is one of the most beautiful cities and is actually cheaper to go around in compared to other cities in Europe. Even if you’re only staying for a day and a half, you can still have a great experience.

Let’s assume you arrive in Berlin midday on  a Thursday and will leave the city by weekend, this is our proposed itinerary.

3 p.m.
1. Art and History

Starting from East Berlin, take some time strolling in Mitte district where you will find several galleries. One of note is the East Side Gallery, which features many paintings. You will also notice the newly painted Berlin Wall and filled in walls that bore bullet holes. There is a museum just under the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Know more about the history of Germany and see the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Cathedral. Finish off by going to a number of museums. There are over 70 available all over the city and entrance at state-run establishments is free on Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m.

6 p.m.
2. Turkish and German Treats

Visit the Nikolaiviertel community. It is distinct because right in the middle is where Berlin’s oldest church is located. You will discover several Turkish delicacies and affordable exotic drinks. You can also enjoy a beer or some wine at the Weinerei bars. The service is good and dessert is offered for free. If you wish to try some local German delights, try a Mensa cafeteria.

11 a.m.
3. German Literature

Discover more German art, literature and history by visiting Gestalten Space. It is a bookshop and exhibition area spanning 350 square meters. Visiting Torstrasse and Augustrasse will treat you to more art galleries and fashion shops. You will also appreciate the photography museum and Jewish Synagogue with the golden dome. Have coffee and a pastry in one of the many cafes in the area. There are also some places that serve great-tasting burgers.

2 p.m.
4. Outdoor Fun

Going to Tiergarten Park will be a great way to unwind and enjoy the great weather. Try the winding stairs and witness the people and monuments from the area overlooking everything. You can also go to Legoland which features several lego-brick creations and a small representation of Berlin. The indoor theme park also has trails and rides and is located at Potsdamer Platz. Berlin Zoo features around 14,000 various exotic animals.

9 p.m.
5. The Nightlife

Experience West Berlin at night and try some champagne and finger food in one of the bistros and bars in the area. The Charlottenburg district comes alive in the evening. You can also party in Kreuzberg. There are clubs for the younger crowds, as well as bars that serve excellent wine for those who like to spend the rest of the evening with good conversation.

By this time, you should have finished one of the most efficient ways to spend 36 hours in Berlin!
